The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
