Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
