On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
